Reading Room

Access to the Reading Room of the State Archives of Fermo is free and open to the public, subject to the submission of a study application. The application must be authorized and is valid for the current calendar year.

Since the institution does not have an internal storage facility, document consultation requires a reservation of the materials, which can be made online via the institutional email address: as-fm.salastudio@cultura.gov.it, by phone at +39 0734 228739, or directly in the reading room using the forms provided to users.

The management may exclude from consultation and/or reproduction documents that are in poor condition.
Documents may only be consulted within the reading room.
Researchers are required to register their daily presence at the Archives by signing the daily attendance register.
Inventories and finding aids of archival collections are freely accessible.
Users may use the Wood’s lamp provided by the Institute.
Any action that may compromise the integrity, cause damage of any kind, or alter the order of archival documentation is prohibited.
Users may use the computer.
Users of the reading room may consult volumes from the Institute’s internal library useful for their research.
Users may request photocopies, database transfers (on their own storage media), database prints of consulted documents, and reproduce materials using their own equipment by submitting the appropriate request forms.
For matters not specified above, reference is made to the current regulations governing State Archives (Royal Decree 1163/1911, Presidential Decree 1409/1963, Presidential Decree 854/1975, Cultural Heritage Code approved by Legislative Decree 22/01/2004 No. 42).

Consultability of Documents (Legislative Decree 22/01/2004 No. 122 and subsequent amendments)

Documents held in the State Archives are freely accessible, except for:

  • Those of a confidential nature relating to the State’s foreign or domestic policy, identified by the Ministry of the Interior in agreement with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, which become accessible fifty years after their date;

  • Those containing sensitive data as well as data relating to criminal proceedings expressly indicated by personal data protection laws, which become accessible forty years after their date;

  • Those capable of revealing health status, sexual life, or confidential family relationships, which become accessible seventy years after their date.

Before the expiration of the above terms, documents remain accessible according to regulations on access to administrative documents. Access requests are handled by the administration that held the document prior to transfer or deposit.

Private archives and those of Public Entities deposited in the State Archives are subject to the same restrictions.

Researchers may consult restricted documents for historical purposes before the expiration of the term only with authorization issued by the Ministry of the Interior, upon advice from the Director of the State Archives and after hearing the special commission established at the same Ministry.

Restricted documents, once consulted, may not be disseminated.

Regarding the use of personal data and other information obtained through consultation at the State Archives, reference is made to the Code of Ethics and Good Conduct for the Processing of Personal Data for Historical Purposes (Official Gazette, April 5, 2001, No. 80).
