The State Archives of Fermo was formally established as a Section of the State Archives of Ascoli Piceno by Ministerial Decree dated July 10, 1965, in accordance with the Archival Law No. 1409 of 1963 (Art. 3).
Even earlier, given the importance of the local documentary heritage—particularly the historical municipal archive—the idea of opening a branch had already been considered. On December 5, 1957, the Municipality of Fermo committed, by council resolution, to cover all related expenses. In November 1958, the Ministry of the Interior granted its authorization, and the branch office was inaugurated in May 1959 through an agreement between the State Archives of Ascoli Piceno and the Municipality of Fermo.
Following the establishment of the Province of Fermo by Law No. 147 of June 11, 2004, the Section was elevated to the status of an autonomous Institute by decree of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities on December 28, 2007.
